Mick Schumacher’s comeback chances now stand

Now that it has been confirmed that Jack Doohan will get the second Alpine cockpit for 2025, things are getting tougher for Mick Schumacher. Formula 1 expert Marc Surer agrees, but advises a team to sign the German.

“The chances are getting smaller and smaller. The only option left is Audi,” said the Swiss, referring to Schumacher’s future prospects, in an interview on the “Formel1.de” YouTube channel.

In Surer’s opinion, the German car manufacturer should put Schumacher in the second cockpit next to Nico Hülkenberg rather than the current Sauber driver Valtteri Bottas. “Before they give Bottas a chance, who is driving around unmotivated at the back, they could also give Mick a chance,” said the 72-year-old.

Surer said he judged Schumacher “quite harshly” during his two-year stint in Formula 1 with Haas, “but also because I believe he did not use his talent.”

The former Formula 1 driver actually believes in the 25-year-old’s abilities. “The guy is fast, he proved that in Formula 2. He was also a great overtaker. So: there’s something in him.”

Formula 1: Mick Schumacher “could not show his potential”

Compared to his then Haas teammate Kevin Magnussen, Schumacher “just looked a bit bad,” judged Surer. “I think he wasn’t able to show his potential. I hope he gets another chance.”

According to the F1 expert, it is not surprising that Alpine is not relying on Schumacher but on homegrown Doohan.

According to Surer, Schumacher would have had to be “significantly” faster in the test duel with the Australian to secure the cockpit in the premier class of motorsport. However, Doohan “obviously looked good in comparison with the son of record world champion Michael Schumacher, otherwise they would have decided differently.”

In this context, Surer also pointed out that Doohan was “always fast” in the junior series and “not a random winner”.
