Microsoft abandons HoloLens 2 and ends the adventure in the world of VR

Microsoft recently announced the end of production of the HoloLens 2 headset, which marks a significant change in the company’s strategy for augmented reality, writes Microsoft Central.

The device, launched in 2019, will continue to receive security updates and critical software patches until December 31, 2027, with software support officially ending in 2028. HoloLens 2 was much more advanced than its predecessor, but nevertheless failed to establish itself on an increasingly competitive market.

Although it initially attracted interest in the space of virtual and augmented reality, Microsoft has not shown significant progress in this direction.

According to sources, the HoloLens division was described by a company employee as a “disaster”. Microsoft has abandoned the development of Windows Mixed Reality, a sign that the technological giant is realigning its priorities.

Likewise, the US Army’s $22 billion Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) project encountered significant difficulties during testing.
