Microsoft Designer It follows the typical patterns of generative AI systems that produce images. Users can provide a text prompt to create an image, but there are also predefined templates to make it easier to create images for social media and greeting cards, for example.

Beyond create new imagesthe app offers an avatar creation function and options for editing existing images. Among the latter, there are tools to remove or change backgrounds and objects within the scene, or to completely restyle the image.

Despite the free download, users can make 15 “boosts” per day, which are automatically consumed when making AI-based edits to images. Users can upgrade to a $22 Copilot Pro subscription to get 100 boosts per day.

Microsoft Designer launch comes as we wait for Apple to introduce Apple Intelligence in its betas, ahead of its fall release. Apple’s system includes a generative AI tool called Image Playground, which creates images based on prompts.
