Microsoft DirectSR Receives AMD FSR 3.1 Support

Microsoft’s DirectSR upscaling API, FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 3.1 support won. DirectSR, the details of which we have talked about for a while, is a programming interface for developers to program to support all three important graphics upscaling technologies in games.

With the new support, it will be easier to integrate FSR 3.1 into games. For DirectX12 games, Microsoft’s API allows game developers to provide support for multiple upgrade tools with a single code path. So by effectively combining three solutions, including not only FSR but also DLSS and XeSS, it is possible for developers to support all three upgrade tools with a single API.

In its early versions, DirectSR had native support for FSR 2.2, while Intel and NVIDIA support required additional drivers. The new FSR 3.1 support has likewise been included in the DirectSR worksheet and only requires updating to the latest preview versions of the API. Thanks to better temporal awareness, FSR 3.1 offers improved ghosting reduction and less flicker or flare.

AMD’s FidelityFX page lists only 43 games with FSR 3 support so far. DirectSR’s FSR 3.1 support will likely come with a much easier workflow for implementing the tool and broader upgrade support for AMD users.
