Microsoft Gaming boss: Last Xbox console not released

The most recent Xbox-kampanjen ”This is an Xbox” focuses on the ability to play on many different types of devices. However, this should not be interpreted as Microsoft intending to abandon its console development, Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer said recently in a conversation with Rolling Stone.

This is despite players in growing numbers choosing PC and cloud gaming over Xbox X/S, which has contributed to Microsoft now seeing Xbox as a broader ecosystem rather than a traditional gaming platform.

Xbox isn’t just a device – Xbox is on your smart TV, Xbox is on your PC, Xbox is on your phone, and we’re in the middle of that transition. -Phil Spencer

Obviously, proprietary hardware is still part of that ecosystem. Judging by Spencer’s comments, there are plans for both new consoles and other devices, the latter category of which likely includes a Steam Deck-style handheld.

In the interview, Spencer also took the opportunity to comment on the Playstation 5 Pro and whether a similar upgraded Xbox console could be in the works. He stressed that Microsoft sees no need for a performance-focused upgrade in the middle of a console generation, which was justified by the fact that today it is harder to see clear benefits of increased performance compared to previous generations.

Spencer explained that future Xbox hardware must offer something unique to gamers and developers, rather than just being a marginal improvement on existing models.
