A patent appeared Microsoft from 2024, which allows to use generative AI in the creation of game stories. According to him, designers can change the story of the game during development, but also during the actual playing of the game by the players.
The patent specifically describes use for the following purposes:
- Creating new game content responsive to player input
- Measuring player engagement metrics during gameplay
- Game modification based on generated content and player interactions
The example shows how the system could be implemented into an already existing sandbox game such as Minecraft. From there, players can issue challenges requesting new game rules, systems, non-player characters (NPCs), or story content to be created on the fly.
In this way, players are supposed to become almost co-authors of the game based on their gameplay interactions, while their behavior would be monitored as a form of implicit feedback for further changes in the game.
In November 2023, Xbox partnered with Inworld AI to create a cross-platform tool and runtime engine for AI characters, enabling the generation of stories, quests and dialogues, which of course is mainly focused on narrative games. The move further reflects Microsoft’s efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into game development to provide players with a more dynamic and customizable gaming experience.
Microsoft is not the only one in the use of AI, and a large use of AI was announced by Netflix Games and concepts were also presented by EA. Of course, they used this technology for various purposes, such as creating models of real people, or editing the game in real time through text.
A demo from EA’s Instant gaming AI where the game changes with text commands:
The enjoyment of AI will continue to expand
Meanwhile, a survey from last August shows that developers are still worried about genAI. Of those polled, 30% believe the move will help cut costs, and 35% think it will similarly lead to lower quality games due to less influence from human ideas. A separate survey from January 2024 also revealed that 31% of developers have started using genAI outside of work. Of course, this patent doesn’t mean Microsoft will start using generative AI in every game title, but it’s certainly trying to expand the horizons for game developers.
