The people of Redmond see that the once popular Xbox avatars are no longer needed.
Two console generations earlier, in 2008, at the time of the Xbox 360 competing with the PlayStation 3, the Nintendo Wii and later the Nintendo Wii U, Microsoft introduced avatars that represented players virtually. Of course, the people of Redmond saw the business in this as well, and sold a lot of different clothes and other accessories so that users could delve even deeper into the possibilities of customization.
Virtual babysitting was cleverly connected with the games, on the one hand, related things were offered on the marketplace, and on the other hand, by purchasing most of the games, you could unlock some little things for the Xbox avatars. Moreover, a free game called Doritos Crash Course was made, in which players could control their own avatar.
Ten years later, in 2018 (when the Xbox One was already on the market), Microsoft came out with more elaborate, even more customizable Xbox avatars, but in the meantime, user interest waned, and now it has reached the level of a decision was made to deactivate the function. On January 9th, the Xbox Avatar Editor app will be retired, and with it all modern avatars will disappear as if they never existed. Anyone who may have spent money on the virtual mass will get their money back, but only after purchases no older than November 1, 2023.
However, not all avatars go into the soup, because those from the Xbox 360 era will remain for the time being, just as the removal of the Xbox Original Avatars application is not yet on the agenda.
