Microsoft is testing a way to browse while gaming. It is not a browser for playing games, but a browser that is placed over a game like a shell. It’s called: Edge Game Assist.
It often happens while gaming that you see something that you actually want to look up about. Maybe even how to approach something in the game. Microsoft wants to help PC gamers with this by allowing the Edge browser to exist as a layer above the game. This is not displayed by default, but you can call it up without having to leave the game.
A browser for gaming assistance
Microsoft writes: “88% of PC players use a browser while gaming to get help, track their progress, or even listen to music or chat with friends. These actions require you to take out your phone or use Alt-Tab to go to your PC desktop, which will take you out of your game. This is a solution for that.”
Edge Game Assist is ‘aware’ of the game, meaning it understands what you’re doing and can provide you with links to tips and guides. It also provides the information from your login profile for Edge, so cookies, autofill and favorites are present, so you don’t have to log in again every time you go to a site.
Handful of games
It is now available for Windows 11, but only its trial version and only in English. It’s currently available for a small selection of games, including Baldur’s Gate 3, Diablo IV and Hellblade II: Senua’s Saga, but that’s being expanded all the time. It is also now only available for keyboard and mouse, so not yet for controllers.
