Microsoft Office LTSC 2024 is available

A Microsoft announced the release of the final version of Office LTSC (Long Term Servicing Channel) 2024, which is now generally available to commercial and government customers. As usual, the package includes the productivity applications Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, OneNote and Microsoft Access.

Locally installed Office is beneficial for those companies AND Organizations that do not want to use the services of one of the Microsoft 365 packages in a subscription system. The essence of the “long-term” LTSC construction is that it does not require a mandatory update, only security updates are received for the given installed version, new capabilities are not – therefore, they are ideal for environments where clients are not connected to the company network and/or the Internet for various reasons.

The Redmond software company provides five-year support for both of these products, so the current versions will also receive the latest security patches until 2029. Microsoft Office LTSC versions are a one-time purchase, no subscription required, but can only be installed on one device per license and do not require an Internet connection. It is specifically aimed at companies, not private users – if only because LTSC licenses can only be obtained through volume licensing agreements.

According to the Redmond company, many use cases and circumstances still justify updating and maintaining the non-subscription version of Office. The new edition includes some of the improvements that have come to Microsoft 365 enterprise applications over the past three years. Most notably, this means dynamic charts and more than a dozen new text and array functions in Excel, improved search and meeting capabilities in Outlook, and improved performance, security, and accessibility tools.

The comparison can be found on the company’s support page table best illustrates the difference between the composition of the Microsoft 365 and Office LTSC 2024 packages: one of the main advantages of Microsoft 365 is that applications can be installed on up to 5 devices, with the LTSC design this is only possible for one device, with the former it is possible to also for the use of functions, which is not the case with the latter, such as the use of mobile and web apps, 1 TB of cloud storage, function updates through updates and, of course, Copilot.
