The global computer failure that occurred on Friday in Microsoft’s Windows operating systems affected around 8.5 million computers, the company revealed today.
This is just an estimate from Microsoft, stating that the computer problem affected “less than 1% of all Windows machines”, according to a report released by the company.
“Although the percentage is small, the significant economic and social impacts observed reflect the use of CrowdStrike by companies that manage many critical services,” Microsoft explained.
The computer failure, which had an impact on transport services, particularly airports, the media and financial markets, was caused by a faulty update to Microsoft’s Windows operating systems, caused by a computer solution from the North American cybersecurity group CrowdStrike.
On Friday, Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz publicly apologized “to all organizations, groups and individuals who were impacted.”
On Microsoft’s side, corporate group vice president David Weston said the incident “was beyond Microsoft’s control” and that hundreds of engineers and experts had been mobilized to help affected organizations.
