Journalists Tom Warren claims that Xbox intends to invest less in marketing its game consoles in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. According to a source, it’s because console sales continue to be too low for Microsoft to see any benefit in prioritizing consoles over other services.
The source claims that Microsoft should instead focus on getting more people to subscribe to Game Pass and join xCloud, as well as sell more Xbox controllers and gain a stronger foothold in the PC gaming market. Fredrik Eriksson, editor at FZ, does not think it is completely far-fetched.
– Most people agree touchingly that the most successful thing about Xbox is Game Pass, and now even Amazon’s Fire Stick has received Game Pass support. Console sales continue to be sluggish and the question is whether Microsoft needs to do something drastic. Or at least: Different. They obviously can’t compete against the Playstation. So the future might still be more Game Pass, PC, streaming and smaller consoles, he says.
Furthermore, the source states that Microsoft will ship fewer Xbox consoles to Sweden and the rest of Europe in the future.
– It is reasonable that it will be like that. Nintendo does their thing, Sony does theirs. Microsoft has wanted to do the same thing as Sony, but it never quite works out. Game Pass with day one game is lucrative, and then it is logical that that is where you invest, says Fredrik Eriksson.
In the past, we have reported that game distributors are considering ending support for Xbox consoles as many consider the console to be “dying” in Europe. Even if the rumors are true, it does not mean that Xbox consoles will disappear from Sweden and Europe completely. Microsoft is already working on the next generation console.
