Microsoft’s browser can be hacked again

Three browser developers and a web development platform have written to the European Commission because, in their opinion, Microsoft is giving an anti-competitive advantage to its own browser, Edge.

Vivaldi, Waterfox, Wavebox and Open Web Advocacy sent the letter to the EU’s executive body in mid-September, asking the Commission to review its previous decision and classify it under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) on the regulation of digital markets. among the gatekeeper services is the Microsoft Edge browser.

According to the organizations, by integrating Edge into the basic software environment of Windows, which is the default browser of the operating system, and other browsers can only be downloaded through Edge, the company gives its own platform an advantage that its rivals cannot to compete.

However, this is not yet clearly reflected in the market power relations, since according to some statistics, Edge has a market share of just over 5% in the global browser segment, while the market leader Chrome is in the lead at 66%.

This is probably what motivated the Commission in February of this year that Edge was ultimately not designated as a gatekeeper platform under the DMA, so it is not subject to the strictest competition law rules. This decision was challenged by Opera in court in July, and the current submission can strengthen the position of the Norwegian browser developer in the trial.
