Migrant boat sinks in Yemen, 41 dead

According to a statement by UNHCR, a boat carrying 45 irregular migrants capsized off the coast of Taiz last night. The statement said the accident occurred due to strong winds and overcrowding, and only four people were able to be rescued. The statement noted that cooperation was being made with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to support the rescued migrants.

Every year, thousands of African migrants try to cross into Yemen by boat with the aim of reaching the Gulf countries. Last month, a boat carrying 260 migrants that set out from Somalia capsized off the coast of Yemen, leaving at least 49 dead and 140 missing. According to IOM data, 1,860 migrants have lost their lives and gone missing since 2014 on the route from East Africa and the Horn of Africa to the Gulf countries.
