Mike Johnson, elected president of the House of Representatives after a dramatic vote

Mike Johnson was elected speaker of the House of Representatives on Friday at the end of a tense voting session, after two Republicans who initially opposed decided to support him at the last minute, according to CNN.

Johnson got exactly the 218 votes needed to win the speakership. Although he had majority support, the vote began with three key defections: Representatives Thomas Massie, Ralph Norman and Keith Self initially expressed support for other candidates. Johnson could only lose one Republican vote to get the necessary majority.

During overtime, Johnson managed to convince Ralph Norman and Keith Self to switch their votes, thus securing his victory.

Although he was sworn in as Speaker of the House of Representatives, Johnson faces a huge challenge: he will lead the House of Representatives with the narrowest majority in almost a century.

An important stake hangs over the new leader: the certification of the victory of President-elect Donald Trump, scheduled for Monday, when Congress must officially validate the result of the presidential election.
