It has been reported that military officers from the Korean People’s Army Military Science Education Film Studio who secretly possessed South Korean e-books, which are classified as reactionary media in North Korea, were arrested by the Military Security Department.

A Pyongyang City source told Daily NK on the 7th, “An incident related to reactionary media occurred at the Military Science Film Studio (hereinafter referred to as the studio) late last month. As a result, a sudden censorship was carried out by the Military Security Department, and four military officers from Room 1 of the Film Studio were detained by the Military Security Department. He was transported to , and a large-scale ideological struggle meeting was held at the studio.”

According to sources, these four people were questioned for secretly viewing dozens of Korean e-books stored in external hard drives and memory (USB) while working at night.

The explanation is that they always carried memory cards with them in their work bags or inside pockets of their military uniforms, waiting for quiet times at night to secretly take them out, and were reported to the military security department by an employee of the same filming studio who was an informant and were arrested.

After receiving the report from the informant, the military security department monitored them regularly and confirmed their direct actions, and conducted a sudden inspection and secured the memories in their bags and military uniform pockets as evidence.

It is reported that the four military officers who were eventually arrested were transferred to the Military Security Bureau and are currently in the process of being investigated.

“This incident caused a great shock within the studio,” the source said. “Afterwards, the studio’s party committee and the military security department jointly held an ideological struggle meeting and carried out intensive ideological education for executives and employees.”

At the ideological struggle conference held at the end of last month, there was strong criticism that “ideologically unsound opportunists crept into the studio, collected videos from reactionary media and clouded the ideological atmosphere in the studio,” and added, “We will fight so that there will no longer be room for these people.” It is said that there was a mention of “strengthen.”

Meanwhile, the Military Security Bureau is said to have cracked down on the incident to prevent it from spreading, warning employees at the studio not to spread the word.

However, since the incident occurred, curiosity about the source and contents of the Korean e-book has increased among studio employees, and rumors have already spread internally.

The source said, “Despite the warning from the military security department, the progress and details of the incident became known to the employees inside the studio, and rumors spread throughout Pyongyang through the family members.”
