Artificial intelligence shall not be used in cases of forced removal of children.
This is what Digitalization Minister Caroline Stage Olsen (M) says at a consultation on Thursday, after her predecessor in the post, Marie Bjerre (V), last year suggested forgetting the fear of touch and using artificial intelligence.
– I don’t see a near future where we use AI in placement cases. I think it is too personal for that, says Caroline Stage Olsen.
The consultation concerns the use of Google Translate as a tool in cases of forced placements. Google Translate is a translation tool.
The subject of artificial intelligence in the broadest sense is brought up at the consultation, where Social Affairs and Housing Minister Sophie Hæstorp Andersen (S) is also invited.
– I have said several times – excuse my French – that you have to make AI unsexy again. We have to start with the lowest-hanging fruit, where we know that AI makes a positive difference, says Caroline Stage and adds that placements do not belong there.
In an interview with the Alting in August 2024, Marie Bjerre said:
– I also think that artificial intelligence can be used in, for example, cases of forced removal of children, where we have otherwise been afraid of touch. The decisive thing must be that there is always a person who actually makes the decision and that the decision is transparent.
There are no laws for or against the use of machine translations in children’s cases. On the other hand, according to the Minister of Social Affairs, there are clear rules for the authority to ensure that the citizens and the authority, which is the municipality, understand each other.
In the specific cases that DR has covered, it is about the forced removal of children from Ukrainian refugee families.
SF, which has convened the consultation, believes that there is a gap in the legislation. Sophie Hæstorp Andersen rejects this. She believes that the legislation is sufficient and clear.
Both ministers agree during the consultation that Google Translate should not replace an interpreter.
– I haven’t seen any indications that Google Translate is exclusively used in the municipalities, and I wouldn’t think it was okay if it was, says the Minister of Social Affairs.
The Minister of Social Affairs and Housing will discuss the matter with the National Association of Municipalities, KL.
The engineering association IDA believes that the government must stop the use of Google Translate in personally sensitive cases such as forced removals.
– Not only that the use of Google Translate gives rise to the risk of incorrect translations, misunderstandings and thus factually incorrect information, which can harm the case of the individual person or family.
– It is also data ethically completely indefensible to let Google be the case manager, says digitization policy chief Grit Munk in a written comment.
