Minister of Finance withdraws ISP support from now on – European Union

The Minister of Finance, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, has already withdrawn support for fuels that are still in forcedespite the European Commission having insisted on this.

The European Commission announced this Tuesday, November 26, that it will recommend the approval of the Medium-Term Structural Budgetary Plan submitted by the Portuguese Government, but reiterates that Portugal continues to not comply with all of the specific recommendations for the country, by maintaining support for fuel prices next year.

“We take note of this recommendation from the European Commission. The European Commission insists that Portugal must withdraw this support. We will analyze, (but) at this moment the Government has no decision on this“, stated Joaquim Miranda Sarmento.

The Finance Minister was speaking to journalists in Parliament, after the European Commission’s decision was announced. “We understand that it is important to keep fuel prices low“, he countered, highlighting that the evolution of oil prices in the coming months will “condition” the government’s action.

Wello there is the intention to change this benefit related to the ISPdespite once again the European Commission insisting that Portugal must withdraw this support for fuels”, reiterated the government official.

Portugal on the right path, highlights Government and Brussels

But Miranda Sarmento wanted to leave yet another message: the European Commission’s assessment, he considers, “It’s a very important victory“, as he says that Portugal “complies with all budgetary rules” and will maintain surpluses. “Which did not happen for a long time”, he said.

“The Government has always said that this is a responsible budget policywhich will maintain budget surpluses in the coming years. Portugal is on the right path”, highlighted the minister.
