The Ministry of Internal Administration clarified this Sunday that the discussion of the right to strike in the police will not be part of the negotiations scheduled for January with trade union associations, following statements by Minister Margarida Blasco.
At the end of the congress of the Police Professionals Union Association (ASPP/PSP), Margarida Blasco stated: “We are going to start on January 6th a set of reviews and it is a point that can and will certainly be on the table. At this point I’m not going to say yes or no, because it will have to go through a study”, when asked by journalists about whether she was willing to grant police officers the right to strike.
However, hours later, a clarification from the Ministry of Internal Affairs sent to newsrooms says that “the Government’s position is clear: in this dialogue labor representation and trade union rights can be discussed. But not the right to strike”. At the end of the congress, which took place in Lisbon, the issue of recognizing the right to strike in the police was addressed by the president of ASPP/PSP, Paulo Santos, who highlighted that this point has been demanded by the unions for a long time and even expressed his satisfaction with the openness demonstrated by the minister.
