The government is seeking to ease the burden of high prices on consumers by providing the largest-ever supply of Lunar New Year supplies and discount support.
On the 9th, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs planned to supply 168,000 tons of the 10 most sacred products (cabbage, radishes, apples, pears, beef, pork, chicken, eggs, chestnuts, and jujubes) by the 27th of this month through the ‘2025 Lunar New Year’s Supply and Demand Stabilization Measures’. They announced that they would supply it. The scale has expanded 1.6 times compared to normal times and is the largest volume ever.
Agricultural products are supplied flexibly according to supply and demand conditions through contract cultivation by Nonghyup, government stockpiling, and designated shipment of apples. To replace the demand for pears that are in short supply, the introduction period for quota tariffs on imported fruits will also be extended and operated. In the case of livestock products, slaughterhouses are operated on weekends during the Lunar New Year preparation period, and supplies held by producer organizations are also utilized to secure supply.
60 billion won, the largest amount among all Lunar New Year measures, will also be invested in the discount support project. At the supermarket, you can get a discount of up to 40% on 28 items with increasing demand for Lunar New Year and holiday items, excluding pears. Traditional markets offer a 30% discount on any item through mobile gift certificate discounts and Onnuri gift certificate refund events.
In particular, 63% of the budget was allocated to traditional markets and small and medium-sized retailers. In the case of mobile gift certificates in traditional markets, the issuance size will significantly increase from KRW 9.8 billion last year to KRW 20 billion this year. The number of markets participating in the refund event also increased from 120 to 160. In addition, we supply Korean beef gift sets and affordable fruit gift sets priced under 100,000 won.
Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Mi-ryeong said, “We are checking daily the impact on supply and demand of changes in weather conditions such as cold waves and outbreaks of livestock infectious diseases such as highly pathogenic avian influenza, and are preparing in advance to respond immediately if abnormal trends occur.” “We will mobilize all of the government’s capabilities to reduce the burden,” he said.
