The Ministry of Education and Science (MES), with support from the European Union Recovery Fund, has launched a study of internet bandwidth in schools across Latvia, the ministry reported.
The study involves educational institutions from 43 local governments, colleges and secondary vocational educational institutions subordinate to the Ministry of Education and Science, as well as educational institutions subordinate to the Ministry of Culture.
The study will help determine the needs of educational institutions to increase data transmission and plan the necessary funding. As the Ministry of Education and Science notes, the degree of digitalization of schools currently varies and often depends on the ability of local governments to allocate funds for these purposes.
Following the study of the situation in schools, local governments will have access to 3 million euros from the EU Recovery Fund to increase internet capacity or purchase information and communication technologies for educational institutions.
Acting State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science Ilse Saleniece noted that improving internet bandwidth in schools will reduce inequality in access to knowledge and educational resources. Students and teachers will have more opportunities to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills, which will contribute to increasing the digital literacy of society.
