(Seoul = Newsis) Reporter Kim Jeong-hyeon = The government has designated 14 regional emergency medical centers as a base amid concerns over a possible emergency room chaos during the Chuseok holiday period due to the political conflict surrounding the increase in medical school enrollment.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on the 13th that it will designate 14 regional emergency medical centers as ‘base regional emergency medical centers’ and operate them with a focus on treating severe emergency patients (KTAS Level 1-2).

All of them are general hospitals or medical institutions with more than 300 licensed beds. 35 institutions that met the requirements applied for designation and passed the evaluation of personnel composition and treatment capacity.

They are distributed in a total of 11 cities and provinces, including 3 in Gyeonggi, 2 in Seoul, and 1 each in Busan, Ulsan, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Jeonbuk, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam, and Jeju.

However, the Ministry of Health and Welfare said that it did not designate Daegu, Gwangju, Daejeon, Sejong, or Jeonnam as no institutions had applied for evaluation.

Hospitals that have passed the designation will be assessed emergency medical fees equivalent to those of regional emergency medical centers while operating as base centers and treating critically ill emergency patients. Instead, the Ministry of Health and Welfare plans to inspect whether hospitals are operating in accordance with their designated purposes.

The Director of Public Health Policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare said, “The designation of a regional emergency medical center will help supplement the treatment capacity for severe emergency patients in the region,” and added, “We will do our best to ensure that the public can feel reassured about emergency situations.”
