Ministry of Health and Welfare Designates 14 Regional Emergency Medical Centers

(Health Korea News / Park Won-jin) The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on the 13th that it has designated 14 regional emergency medical centers to focus on treating critically ill emergency patients.

The regional emergency medical center base is a designation that allows capable regional emergency medical centers to operate with a focus on treating severe emergency patients (KTAS Level 1-2), with the aim of reducing the burden on regional emergency medical centers and increasing the country’s overall capacity to treat severe emergency patients.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare explained that among the 35 institutions that applied for the regional emergency medical center, which were general hospitals or higher with more than 300 licensed beds, they evaluated their personnel composition and treatment capabilities, and designated a total of 14 institutions.

Institutions designated as base regional emergency medical centers will be assessed emergency medical fees equivalent to those for regional emergency medical centers for severe emergency patients treated during the period of operation. The Ministry of Health and Welfare plans to monitor base regional emergency medical centers to ensure that they are operated in accordance with their designated purpose.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Public Health Policy Director Jeong Tong-ryeong said, “The designation of a regional emergency medical center will help supplement the treatment capacity of critically ill emergency patients in the region,” and “We will do our best to ensure that the public can feel reassured about emergency situations.”

For reference, Daegu, Gwangju, Daejeon, Sejong, and Jeonnam, which do not have application agencies, have not designated a regional emergency medical center.
