Ministry wants differentiation of non-teaching workers in schools

The Ministry of Education will present a proposal for the differentiation of non-teaching workers in schools.

According to Minister Fernando Alexandre, in a meeting with journalists, the measure aims to enhance the careers of these professionals.

Operational assistants, who started to be hired by local authorities following the decentralization process, “are undifferentiated workers and do everything within the school”.

“There are schools that manage this with great quality, differentiating profiles, and it is along these lines that we are preparing a proposal”, stated the Minister of Education.

The proposal will be presented to the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) which, in fact, is awaiting a response from the Government on this matter, after meeting at the end of October.

In addition to this proposal, the Government is preparing to soon begin a study that will map the different skills of operational assistants in schools across the country.

The academic year has been marked by several strikes by non-teaching staff and operational assistants. Enhancement of careers and salary adjustments are the main demands of these professionals.
