“Request to cancel the Pat lawsuit, party response”
The Innovation Party Accuses the National Assembly of ‘Korean Comment Team’
As the People Power Party leadership is expected to be formed as early as the 23rd, the opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea and the Fatherland Innovation Party, are targeting the suspicions that arose at the People Power Party’s national convention. The ruling party’s party leadership candidates’ revelations are providing the opposition with good attack material. The offensive, which began before the ruling party’s new leadership was even elected, is expected to continue even after the new leadership of both the ruling and opposition parties is formed.
The Democratic Party of Korea has decided to form a task force (TF) regarding the suspicions surrounding the Han Dong-hoon comment team. On the 22nd, Democratic Party Spokesperson Lee Hae-sik met with reporters and stated, “There was a complaint from a civic group regarding the Han Dong-hoon opinion-forming team, but there was an order from Acting Party Leader (Park Chan-dae) to consider forming a TF team in the party to respond.” The spokesperson continued, “The point is that since opinion manipulation is a very serious charge that destroys democracy, the party needs to review it more thoroughly.”
The Democratic Party is also taking a wait-and-see approach regarding the suspicion that Rep. Na Kyung-won asked then Minister of Justice Han Dong-hoon to drop the Fast Track case. Spokesperson Lee said, “I understand that a civic group filed a complaint today (the 22nd) regarding the drop in the case,” and “We have decided to respond as the party watches the situation.” Meanwhile, the Democratic Party is also preparing to submit a special prosecutor’s request. Spokesperson Lee added, “We have decided to present three major demands: a re-deliberation of the Chae Hae-byung Special Prosecutor Act in line with the election of the new leadership of the People Power Party, a statement of position on the Kim Gun-hee Special Prosecutor Act, and an end to control of the broadcasting system.”
The Fatherland Innovation Party is moving more actively than the Democratic Party. On this day, the Fatherland Innovation Party reported the suspicions surrounding the Han Dong-hoon comment team to the National Investigation Headquarters. In front of the National Investigation Headquarters in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, Fatherland Innovation Party lawmaker Cha Gyu-geun held a press conference and said, “Who would have imagined that a public official would operate a comment team to create public opinion favorable to himself?” and “If he wrote posts and distributed content to create public opinion favorable to himself while serving as the Minister of Justice, it would be an illegal and unfair act in light of his general official authority.”
