Modernization of Nis airport: Investment of 140 million euros

Yesterday, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on the implementation of the “Konstantin the Great” airport construction and modernization project, which represents the continuation of investment in this airport. The Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesić pointed out that over 140 million euros will be invested in this phase, which will make the airport fully functional.

The contract was signed by Minister Vesić and chief engineer of the company “China Shandong International” Zhang Jianchao in the presence of important political and diplomatic representatives of Serbia and China. According to the minister, this is already the second memorandum on airport construction signed this year, and the previous phase included the completion of new parking spaces and access roads to the terminal.

Vesić reminded that it is already invested more than 30 million euroswhich made it possible for Niš to have a functional airport of importance for citizens and passengers. In the second phase, work is planned on the renovation of the runway, the extension of the platform that is the connection between the terminal building and the plane parking platform, and the construction of the taxiway and the demolition of the old building are also planned.

The minister expressed his gratitude to the Chinese ambassador and Chinese partners who, according to him, are ready to finance the complete construction of the airport in the next three years, and Serbia will start repayment from 2027.

He also stated that the Government of Serbia is investing significant funds in other infrastructure projects in Niš, such as the construction of a railway bypass and the reconstruction of the Niš-Dimitrovgrad railway.

Airport modernization projects are also aimed at increasing cargo traffic, which gives Niš the opportunity to develop as a logistics center in the region. According to the minister, the number of passengers at the airport is constantly growingand with further improvements, the arrival of a larger number of low-cost companies is expected.
