I got the chance to try out Monster Meals, a chef management simulator developed by Giant Warrior Studio and published by GoGo Games Interactive. So let’s see what’s on the menu, which apparently includes tempura scorpions and raw lizards. So delicious…?
The game started with a quick and cute (in the works) opening cutscene where a group of little monsters realize that they don’t need to eat garbage to survive, but instead turn their little camper into a food truck and earn money by serving delicious meals from not-so-appetizing places . However, your ingredients are not given correctly. No, you will have to hunt various exotic animals in close proximity such as rats, cockroaches, scorpions, vultures and more. This can range from simply headbutting creatures, throwing your weapon to hit them out of the air, to even fishing in the sewers. It’s called sustainable!
Of course, you’ll need to keep your customers happy by making their orders on time, otherwise… uh… you might have to get a replacement table. Or a new team member. Eventually, you’ll turn a humble food truck into a double-decker caravan/mobile kitchen and serve up some incredibly weird dishes to the monsters.
First, I feel like I’m playing a 2D single-player version of Overcooked. She’s incredibly sweet and charming, but that hides her chaotic nature as you run around trying to juggle several quests at once, making sure nothing burns and you don’t get eaten while earning enough money to three star a level.
There’s local co-op multiplayer so you can take on the culinary world with a friend, but you’ll need a controller to play. It definitely eases the burden of dealing with monsters, probably at the cost of your vocal chords and relationships if things go wrong.
In between your potentially deadly days serving customers, you’ll be at a home base where you can use the money you earn to buy cosmetic items (hats, clothes, weapons), change your appearance, enter or exit co-op, and choose the next level. It also happens to be infested with giant spiders and rats on occasion. What a beautiful place!
Based on what I’ve played, Monster Meals is shaping up to be a pretty good journey through a monstrous culinary world. While it doesn’t have all the sound effects and extras of the aforementioned Overcooked games, it seems like good fun. If you’re interested, expect to play the full version in January 2025.
