Montenegro says he does not believe that PS wants to mischaracterize the OE – Economy

The president of the PSD said this Saturday that he does not believe that the PS, after announcing the viability of the State Budget, now intends to “adulterate or mischaracterize” it in the specialty, considering it “unedifying to launch this anathema” on the socialist leader.

“I don’t believe that a party with the history and responsibility of the PS would announce the feasibility of a Budget at the same time as it wanted to tamper with it or mischaracterize it. I don’t believe that, honestly,” said Luís Montenegro upon arrival at the 42nd Congress of the PSD, which takes place this weekend in Braga.

Luís Montenegro had been asked if he was afraid of the statements made by the secretary general of the PS, Pedro Nuno Santos, that he embarks on the discussion process in the specialty of the State Budget with “complete freedom”.

In response, the Prime Minister also said no, considering that “politicians, all of them, especially those with leadership responsibilities, must be consistent with their relationship with the country, with the Portuguese people”.

“I don’t even think it is edifying to throw this anathema at the secretary general of the PS that he will now have a hidden intention of taking advantage of his work in the specialty in the Assembly of the Republic to contradict what he said he would do in the name of the PS”, he highlighted. .

Montenegro said he believes “in the word of the main political leaders, those who also have added responsibilities”.

The social democratic leader said he thought that politicians should “respect each other” and that the secretary general of the PS “made the decision he considered most correct” when announcing the feasibility of the State Budget.

“He took it consciously, with a sense of responsibility, as I have already had the opportunity to point out, and will naturally be consistent with that”, he said.

The president of the PSD said that he arrives at this congress “calmly” and asked that “this type of disturbance” not be created, after being asked about possible changes to the Budget during the process in the specialty, and in particular a possible drop in the IRC, qualified as “cornerstone” of the document.

“The main thrust of this Budget is something that is rarely talked about: it is the first budget, as long as we can remember, that did not include a single tax. It drops a lot and maintains others”, he said.

In these statements to journalists, Montenegro was also asked whether he considered that the fact that the PS secretary general had announced his voting direction on the eve of the PSD Congress was intended to condition the social-democratic main meeting.

The PSD president responded that, “whether there was a congress or not, the parties have to take a position in relation to the State Budget, they each choose their ‘timing’ and their form”.

“We, in congress, take stock of the work we have done and project the work we want to do and this is indifferent to what happens with other political forces from the point of view of the essentials. Obviously, political reality is always adjusted because we do not we are in the political arena alone”, he stated, despite highlighting that he did not change his speech in Congress after learning about the PS’s stance on the State Budget.

“I have no problem assuming that I knew a long time ago what I had to say and have to say, at the beginning and end of this congress”, he said, also rejecting having given instructions to soften criticism of the PS during this congress .

“No, I don’t give guidance like that. The PSD is a free, plural party, where everyone says what they think at all times”, he stressed.
