Montenegro’s list for the National Council has an absolute majority with 46 elected

The PSD National Council leadership list headed by the mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, obtained an absolute majority this Sunday, at the party’s 42nd Congress, in Braga, obtaining 46 of the 70 councilors.

The result is a reinforcement in relation to what had been achieved by Luís Montenegro’s administration in 2022, when he elected 42 of the 70 councilors, 60% of the seats, in a major meeting at which seven candidates for the National Council competed.

For the Council of National Jurisdiction (CJN), the board of directors, headed by the Minister of Health Ana Paula Martins, received the most votes, obtaining six of the nine seats in this body.

Plate B, led by José Miguel Bettencourt, elected three members.

In the 42nd Congress, the leadership won 65% of the seats in the National Council, although this time only four candidates competed.

The second most voted list was headed by João Gomes da Silva, with 12 councilors elected. Plate C, of former deputy André Pardal, won eight mandates, and plate D, of former Setúbal district leader Luís Rodrigues, won four.

The last major meeting before Montenegro’s election, in December 2021, featured 11 candidate lists for the party’s highest body among the Congresses, and Rui Rio’s leadership elected only 17 of the 70 councilors, corresponding to 24%.

In absolute numbers, 693 delegates voted this Sunday for the National Council, with only 16 blank votes and nine null votes.
