The number of patients with atopic dermatitis is increasing, due to excessive pollution and increasingly preserved food, the prevalence of this disease in Romania being almost 10%.
The alarming data emerge from a new study by the Romanian Society of Dermatology. The president of this professional forum, Dr. Călin Giurcăneanu, draws attention on the occasion of World Atopic Dermatitis Day, that a genetic factor exists in most of the patients with this disease and that environmental components play an important role.
“Excessive pollution increases the number of patients with atopic dermatitis, food, which has become more and more preserved (…), the infectious factor is very important, staphylococcus aureus being one of the elements that are discussed. Almost one in ten Romanians has a tendency to develop atopic dermatitis, children have more, about 20%”, pointed out Călin Giurcăneanu.
Doctor: Atopic dermatitis, “an extremely difficult condition” for patients
For his part, Dr. Alin Nicolescu, secretary general of the Romanian Society of Dermatology, pointed out that atopic dermatitis is “an extremely difficult condition” for patients, which raises many problems related to health and social integration.
“For a long time it was and may still be disregarded, it was treated as simple eczema, it was treated as an allergy or as I don’t know what else, not being such a condition and a condition for which numerous therapies have been developed advanced”, added Alin Nicolescu, appropriately Agerpres.
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, characterized by intense itching, red, dry and cracked skin eruptions.
“If in the case of a moderate form of atopic dermatitis the risk of developing other conditions, such as bronchial asthma or allergic rhinitis, amounts to a percentage of 20%, in the case of a severe form of this condition the risk is four times higher, and avoiding the doctor dermatologist can lead to extremely serious complications, seriously altering the health status of patients, especially since atopic dermatitis is a treacherous imitator of other diseases, if it is not fully and correctly diagnosed”, said Alin Nicolescu.
