In Milan the debate is heating up over a proposal that aims to increase parking rates for large vehicles, especially SUVs. The motion, presented to the city council by several majority councilors, proposes to double or triple the cost of parking for vehicles exceeding certain weight and size thresholds.
The first signatory is Enrico Fedrighini, an ecologist from the mixed group, but the initiative is also supported by representatives of the PD, Europa Verde and Beppe Sala’s Civic List. The proposal is meeting opposition from the centre-right and could also raise doubts within the majority.
The proposal aims to target the most impactful vehicles, not just SUVs.
The motion suggests applying an increase in the parking fee for vehicles that exceed 1.6 tons in weight and certain dimensions, yet to be precisely defined. Other factors to consider would be the parking time and the urban parking area (center or outskirts).
In the motivation, reference is made to the growing impact of SUVs on the market European automotive sector, which went from 9% to 47% between 2010 and 2022 for the six largest manufacturers.
Despite the initial focus on SUVs, the proposal would actually concern all large vehicles and heavy vehicles, including station wagons, minivans and minivans. Many small and medium-sized SUVs, such as the popular Jeep Avenger, would not be affected by the new rules.
Fedrighini clarifies that the objective is reduce the impact of heavier and bulkier vehicles on the production of fine particulate matter, a problem that also affects electric cars.
The opposition has raised concerns about the impact of the measure on large families, who often use larger vehicles. In response, Fedrighini stressed the importance of sharing vehicles, recalling a proposal by Free access and parking for vehicles with at least two people on boardregardless of the size of the vehicle.
The discussion on the motion It could happen before the summer break of August. The debate promises to be heated, with significant implications for mobility and the urban environment of Milan.
