Over the past year, Roskomnadzor recorded 135 cases of leaks into the network of databases that contained over 710 million records about Russians. RIA Novosti writes about this with reference to data provided by the regulator.
“In 2024, Roskomnadzor recorded 135 cases of databases containing more than 710 million records being distributed on the Internet,” said a representative of the agency.
Let us recall that in November last year, the President of the Russian Federation signed a law increasing liability for leaks of personal data and their illegal trafficking. The document supplemented the Criminal Code Art. 272 “Illegal use and (or) transfer, collection and (or) storage of computer information containing personal data.” For a massive data leak (over 100 thousand personal data subjects or 1 million identifiers), fines increased to 400 thousand rubles for citizens, up to 600 thousand rubles for officials and up to 15 million rubles for legal entities.
In December last year, the head of Roskomnadzor, Andrei Lipov, said that the joint work of the department under his control with telecom operators made it possible to reduce the number of subscribers with more than a thousand SIM cards by six times. He also recalled that from 2025, residents of the country will be able to obtain no more than 20 SIM cards, and foreigners – no more than 10 SIM cards. At the same time, he added that the new liability measures adopted in the country will encourage companies to take issues of personal data protection more seriously.
