BarcelonaIn closed spaces, but especially inside houses and garages. These were the main places where more than half of the people who died due to the DANA that devastated the Valencian Country almost three weeks ago lost their lives. This is reflected in the data made public by the Data Integration Center (CID) through the Valencian Superior Court of Justice and which describe in a generic way the spaces where the dead bodies of the fatal victims were removed during the catastrophe
According to the provisional balance sheet of the CID, 65 of the 218 victims who had been counted until Saturday lost their lives inside a house, many probably in low-lying areas, as they were the areas that were flooded, and also the homes where the older people and those with mobility problems lived. Inside the houses, they are followed by garages and commercial parking lots (32), spaces that were denied water and that took a lot to empty, since many were underground and the flood had dumped mud and debris, in more than many still had cars inside that needed to be checked one by one.
A dozen grandparents died in nursing homes
As for the open spaces, the bodies of 24 fatalities were found in fields, such as the case of Florin and Axinia that the army searched for days in the fields near their home, on the outskirts of Valencia . 21 victims were also found in the streets of the twenty Valencian municipalities that suffered the effects of the downpours, which left more than 600 liters of water in a few hours in some parts of the territory. In addition, they also located 10 elderly people who had died in a residence, six who had lost their lives inside the car and a dozen who were found on roads or paths. On the other hand, there were four people who died once admitted to the hospital, three who were located in trees, three more in ravines and three more in basements.
According to the data made public this Sunday, two victims were also found in spaces such as elevators, terraces of homes, drains, under the car or in the parking lot of a supermarket, and two more in Albufera, which is located about 15 km from Paiporta, which is considered the ground zero of the DANA catastrophe in the Valencian Country. In addition, fatalities were also found in places such as industrial estates, a church, a telephone pole or a sports complex.
In the latest count made public this Sunday, the number of people who have lost their lives due to DANA in the State has risen to 227. In the Valencian Country, 219 people have died, seven in Castilla-La Mancha and one in Andalusia In addition, 13 people are still listed as missing.
