Most of the EU leaders supported Zelensky’s “victory plan”, but the invitation to NATO is a problem News

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, most of the heads of government of the European Union countries at today’s summit supported the so-called victory plan for Ukraine.

18 members of the European Council commented on the plan and most of the speakers expressed their full support, the president said at a press conference in Brussels. When asked if he spoke today with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who is the most vocal opponent of military aid to Ukraine among the leaders of the G27, Zelenskyy replied that he had said hello to him.

The first point of the so-called victory plan is the invitation of Ukraine to NATO. According to Zelensky, this would not mean dragging the United States into the war, as some Americans think. On the contrary, according to Zelenský, it is necessary that actions correspond to words about membership, in the form of a formal invitation to the alliance. In fact, according to Zelensky, Ukraine could gain membership even after the war.

However, the Ukrainian army will continue to fight against the Russian invasion forces, even if the Western partners do not support the so-called victory plan, Zelenskyi said. According to him, Kyiv will continue preparations for the second peace summit.

Zelenskyy also confirmed speculation about the number of North Korean soldiers that Russia is planning to send to Ukraine after training. Citing intelligence, the president said that it was about 10,000 soldiers. At the same time, he noted that there are already North Korean officers on occupied Ukrainian territory, but he did not specify their number.

Regarding the issue of Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, Zelenskyi also discussed this topic with former US President Donald Trump during his recent visit to the US. Trump is seeking a return to the White House in the November elections, and his comments about future US support for Ukraine in the event of his victory are causing uncertainty among allies. According to Zelenskyi, Ukraine’s membership in NATO would not actually drag the US into war and it might not come immediately.

Zelenskyy said that in his conversation with Trump, he mentioned the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which provided Ukraine with security guarantees from Britain, Russia and the United States in exchange for Ukraine giving up nuclear weapons on its territory. At the same time, he pointed out that if Ukraine does not have nuclear weapons, it needs to be a member of the alliance. However, Zelenskyi did not want to give further details about his conversation with Trump.

Regarding the position of the narrow group of allies of Ukraine on the delivery of long-range missiles, Zelenskyi spoke of “positive signals”. But he also emphasized that the representatives of these countries must first agree on the matter among themselves and that the consent of the USA is crucial for this matter.
