‘Motorola to launch new, smaller ThinkPhone in 2025’

Motorola is said to be planning to release a new ThinkPhone in 2025. This is a smartphone aimed at business users with a strong focus on security. The device will have a smaller screen and, surprisingly, slower hardware.

‘Motorola ThinkPhone 2025 to get slower processor’

Early 2023, Motorola released its first ThinkPhone. That high-end device was based on Lenovo’s ThinkPads and, like those laptops, aimed at business users. For example, many security features were built in and the casing proved to be extra sturdy.

This year we didn’t see a successor, but according to Android Headlines a new Motorola ThinkPhone will appear in 2025. The website also shares many specifications, which show that it will be a very different smartphone. For example, the screen shrinks from 6.6 to 6.36 inches. It is again an OLED display, with a resolution of 2670 by 1200 pixels. The refresh rate is 120Hz. This ensures smooth images, although the first ThinkPhone did slightly better with 144Hz.

It is striking that the device gets less fast hardware. The Motorola ThinkPhone 2025 is said to have a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chip. That is a midrange processor that cannot match the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 from the first ThinkPhone. There is 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

Due to the smaller size, the battery shrinks from 5000 mAh to 4310 mAh. You charge it just as fast: with 68 watts. The required charger would also simply be in the box.

In terms of cameras, we do see an upgrade. In addition to the familiar 50-megapixel main camera and 13-megapixel wide-angle lens, you can count on a 10-megapixel telephoto lens that zooms in 3x. This camera replaces the (rather useless) depth sensor of the first ThinkPhone.

Price is probably lower

The Motorola ThinkPhone 2025 retains its rugged build, features Gorilla Glass 7i against scratches and is IP68 certified. That makes it well-resistant to the elements. We expect all the security features to return too.

The first ThinkPhone is now available for €499, but had a hefty suggested retail price of €999 at the beginning of 2023. Given the slower hardware, we expect its successor to be a lot cheaper.
