November belongs to men! Their health and the strength they need for their daily victories. Only 6% to 12% of men annually undergo a preventive examination by a urologist, which is crucial for the early detection of prostate and testicular cancer. That’s why MOVEMBER is here (MOustache – mustache + noVEMBER).
It is a worldwide charity project whose goal is to raise funds to support men’s health and raise awareness about men’s health. MOVEMBER 2024 comes to Slovakia with the main message “Because… we care about men’s health”, to raise awareness of the importance of preventive care for men’s health and to encourage an open discussion on this topic. Every man who grows a beard during the month of November is expressing solidarity and at the same time helping to spread important awareness in his surroundings. Anyone can join the project, regardless of age or gender.
“Malignant prostate cancer is diagnosed annually in about 2,000 men in our country, which ranks it 2nd-3rd. place in the occurrence of malignant tumors in Slovakia, more than 600 patients will succumb to it. The prognosis of the disease depends on the stage at which it is diagnosed,” explains the head of the urology department of the AGEL Skalica University Hospital, MUDr. Ľubomír Uherčík, PhD. The earlier the tumor is caught, the greater the chance of an early and complete cure. Men should therefore remember to self-examine their testicles and not forget about a regular preventive examination by a urologist. “The preventive examination begins with a conversation with the patient about his difficulties and the quality of urination. This is followed by a physical examination – palpation of the abdomen, lower abdomen, and lumbar region, and then the kidneys, bladder, and prostate are examined by ultrasound, and a palpation examination is performed through the anus,” explains MUDr. Ľubomír Uherčík, PhD. For men over 40 with a positive family history, a preventive PSA test is also performed. This laboratory test can detect an increased level of the specific antigen PSA for prostate cancer in the blood. It is a reliable non-invasive examination in the prevention and diagnosis of prostate cancer. Men who care about their health can take the Prostate Health test to determine the PHI – healthy prostate index in the AGELLAB network in November at a discounted price. A comprehensive evaluation of their state of health will provide them with the Men’s Health test designed for men over 30 years of age.
November 29 a conference and event will take place in the stylish Devín Hotel in Bratislava, where experts – urologists will bring the latest knowledge about early diagnosis and an onco-psychologist will tell more about the survival of oncology patients and motivations to prevent prostate and testicular cancer. The conference will also feature well-known personalities who will support the topic with their stories and experiences. The main message of the conference will be the English word: “MOVE” – “MOVE” and go for an examination to a urologist… so that it is not too late!
In the early evening, visitors can enjoy an entertainment program dedicated to the MOVEMBER Challenge – every man can have his beard shaved right at the event and capture this moment under the hands of experienced barbers. The evening will also include an original burlesque show, a photo contest for men and a fun raffle.
MOVEMBER is not just about a campaign, but about real help for those facing prostate and testicular cancer. “We like to be involved not only this month, but also throughout the year in activities that bring awareness to the prevention of male oncological diseases. We believe that this year will again bring greater awareness of the possibilities of prostate and testicular cancer prevention among Slovak men thanks to Movembre,” says Ing. Eva Kováčová, executive director of the League against cancer.
November 30 – MOVEMBER RUN 2024
“Charity run for men’s health”
The MOVEMBER RUN charity run, which culminates the November project, will take place on Saturday, November 30 from 10:00 a.m. – hotel Devín Bratislava. Use the opportunity to personally support the initiative and help men. Everyone who registers through the PREDPREDAJ.SK portal and pays a beneficial entry fee of 24 euros (children under 16 free) will receive a MOVEMBER 2024 commemorative T-shirt. The route is very easy and is approximately two kilometers long – from Hotel Devín to the Railway Bridge and back. If you are not one of the runners, feel free to come and enjoy a pleasant family walk. Proceeds from the entry fee will go to the Cancer League to support men’s health.
