Users with Windows 7 and Windows 8 got a few months’ grace.
Originally, starting this month, the extended support version of Mozilla’s browser, i.e. Firefox 115 ESR, would no longer support Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems, however, according to Firefox’s calendar, the company extended the deadline to 2025. updates for older Windows versions will definitely arrive until March 4.
In a recent post on Reddit, a Mozilla employee said there are still enough users of these operating systems to make the decision worthwhile.
A StatCounter according to its latest data, Windows 7 is still installed on 3.03 percent of PCs running Windows, while Windows 8.1 is still installed on 0.41 percent. Based on this, it is surprising that Mozilla still finds these operating systems worthy of support, but the affected users are doing well because they have been given a little more time to switch to Windows.
By the way, the companies behind most major browsers stopped supporting older Windows operating systems a long time ago: in the case of Microsoft, Edge stopped supporting Windows 7 and Windows 8 from January 12, 2023, while Google stopped supporting it in 2023. as of February 7th, it stopped releasing updates to Chrome users who had Windows 7. But it’s not just the browser companies that have decided to do this, others too: Steam, Nvidia (with GPU drivers) and Rufus, among others, have already done so.
