Much ado about nothing? 3 reasons why I’m not interested in Nintendo Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch 2 is one of the most anticipated game consoles of this year, but I can’t help but feel that the excitement surrounding this console is rather exaggerated. Although the first-gen Switch revolutionized portable gaming, I miss the real “wow” effect of its successor. What’s putting me off a new console? I think these are the 3 main reasons.

The design remains almost unchanged

One of the biggest issues I see with the new Switch is its unsurprising design, which was leaked at CES 2025. Nintendo has taken the path of minimal changes to keep the iconic look that gamers have come to love. This approach certainly makes sense, as no one wants to risk losing fans with radical modifications.

Still, I can’t shake the impression that I would have expected a bigger leap forward from a console labeled as second generation. The new second-generation Nintendo Switch will offer a larger display and modified Joy-Con controllers, but that’s just not enough to make it truly innovative.

The competition is taking over

Another reason is its weaker competitiveness on the market. Although Nintendo promises improved performance and more modern hardware, another player dominates the portable console market today, namely the Steam Deck. It offers higher performance, a larger library of games and wider setting options. Other devices that focus on hardware superiority are similarly on the same page. Although Nintendo has long benefited from its exclusive titles that attract millions of fans, it may not be enough this time.

Higher price and compatibility issue

The final cause for concern is the likely price of the new console. The Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to cost more than its predecessor, which could turn off a significant portion of gamers. There is speculation about the amount of 400 to 450 euros (approx. 10 to 12 thousand crowns without VAT). Additionally, there is considerable uncertainty regarding game compatibility.

Question marks hang over whether the original titles from the first Switch will run on the second generation without problems, so players risk additional expenses by repurchasing the games. While Nintendo has been tight-lipped about backwards compatibility for now, if it wasn’t ensured, it could be an annoying setback for those who already have a large library of games.

Leaker NatetheHate and server information VGC agree that the performance should take place already on January 16. However, it doesn’t look like the Nintendo Switch 2 will bring a real revolution. For me personally, the question remains as to whether it is really worth investing in a device that stays very close to the ground. Maybe that’s why I’m looking forward to the next steps of the competition rather than a new product from Nintendo.
