Much more is being written about Apple’s possible foldable iPhone

They are coming back to the fore rumors of a foldable iPhone and currently it’s just a tech industry myth and there are only unverifiable leaks. However, there is one way of getting information about this potential phone that gives us a much more grounded look at what Apple might be planning: patents. Now an update via a new patent suggests the company wants to emulate today’s popular foldables.

The patent “20240310942” describes what Apple is now thinking about adding an external screen to its foldable phone. A new design image of this model is described with a foldable inner screen and another outer screen. Apple illustrates and talks about a triple folding screen, something like what we saw on the Huawei Mate XT, to a truly behemoth!

Interestingly, the specific wording the patent uses is “Foldable iPhone (& Other Devices)”, hinting at other possible foldable devices. Imagine a triple iPad that can open up and be as big as a small desk. Ridiculous and over the top? Yes! But would it attract attention in stores? We answer “YES”.

Foldables have gained a lot of popularity recently and it makes perfect sense that Apple would want to jump on this trend as well. Samsung, Google and other phone makers beat Apple to the punch, but the company usually likes to take its time getting things done “the Apple way”.

But if Apple delays any longer, it may be too late. Samsung is reportedly set to debut a device with a rollable screen next year. Not only would this be an insane feat of engineering, but it could also render the rest of the foldables somewhat obsolete.

A rolling screen has a significant advantage over folding screens, e.g. has a variable length. Users can choose how big they want their phone screen to be at any time, kind of like a measuring tape.
