After the Olympic Games, the Workers’ Games in Budva will follow!
It will be held for the 29th time in a row Republican games of utilities and over 1,500 competitors will participate. Budva will once again, from September 9 to 15, for the 29th year in a row, host the International Republican Games of the Utilities Union – Municipal Olympics, a manifestation that gathers sports enthusiasts and workers from the utility sector. This event, which has become a tradition, will host participants from all over Serbia, but also from neighboring countries, who will compete in various disciplines. Competitors will compete in a total of 18 men’s and 17 women’s sports, as well as in six work-production disciplines, showing not only their sports skills but also their work competencies.
The official opening of the games is scheduled for September 9 in the evening, when the participants and guests will gather to officially start this event. More than 1,500 utility workers will be in one place, so the organizer, the Union of Employees in the Utility and Housing Industry, considers this event bigger than a sports event – for them it is a symbol of togetherness, friendship and professional pride.
Aleksandar Radojević, the President of the Union of Employees in the Communal-Housing Industry of Serbia, points out that there is a great interest of communal workers from European cities to participate, but the lack of sports infrastructure facilities is an obstacle, stating that there are 35 matches in indoor soccer alone.
– This event represents an extraordinary opportunity for the promotion of sports, a healthy lifestyle and team spirit among workers in the utility sector. The desire of all teams is to play as many games as possible, but we are not yet able to provide qualifying tournaments, instead the cup system is played immediately, so that many teams, regardless of quality, fall out of further competition immediately after the first round. The number of awards speaks for the scope of this competition, 147 cups, 582 medals and each one must be won – says Radojevic.
The technical secretary of the trade union, Nenad Nešić, promised that the quality of football will improve this year and that a surface will be installed on the football field from the quarter-finals, which will greatly reduce the possibility of sports injuries. Every year, the Municipal Olympiad chooses the most successful team from all sports – the overall winner, so the defender of last year’s title is “GSP Belgrade”, for which it was the 12th consecutive trophy.
