Musk won! Its X, as the only major platform, remains outside the reach of EU laws

  • The European Commission has announced online platforms that will be subject to regulation
  • X is missing among them, thanks to Elon Musk
  • X thus avoids not only regulations, but also potential fines

The European Commission prepared list of multinational technology companiesor their online platforms, which are so important that it is necessary to regulate them by European laws. It will apply to them anew the Digital Markets Act. And if they violate it, they can be fined up to 10% of their worldwide revenue.

According to the EU decision, these include:

  • Meta
  • Apple
  • Alphabet (Google)
  • Amazon
  • Microsoft
  • Booking
  • TikTok

In professional slang, this is the so-called gatekeepery. They are characterized by having at least 45 million monthly active users and at least 10,000 company profiles.

Musk avoided inclusion

Many people are surprised that one very important global platform is missing among them, which is X (formerly Twitter). It also meets the above-mentioned conditions. The commission therefore considered inclusion, but the company’s management decided to fight for its freedom.

“Company X has submitted rebuttal arguments explaining why, in its view, its online social network should not qualify as a ‘gatekeeper’ even if X is deemed to meet the quantitative thresholds set out in the DMA,” is stated in the EC’s official statement.

So Elon Musk has won for now. But politicians plan to closely monitor his network and, if necessary, assign it to other gatekeepers. Which infuriates Musk, who rejects laws and regulations. And that’s why he didn’t hesitate to share his feelings on X.

“Věra Jourová is the embodiment of banal bureaucratic evil,” he remarked laconically about the Czech politician, who is also the vice-president of the European Commission for values and transparency. In the past, she called him a “propagator of evil”.

Do you agree to remove X from the gatekeeper list?
