Among the mostly sensible hybrid or plug-in hybrid models from Toyota, the GR Yaris is a bizarre outlier. The GR Yaris is the only three-door version of the current generation Yaris in Europe, but that is not the only thing that sets it apart from its more docile brothers. It has a heavily extended body and – now – a 280 hp and 390 Nm strong 1.6 three-cylinder that distributes its power to all four wheels via a manual gearbox or automatic. The GR Yaris costs at least an almost ridiculous €81,795 in the Netherlands. Outside Europe, the Corolla also has a crazy GR version. That one also has a hot 1.6 three-cylinder, but then a 304 hp and 400 Nm strong model. Toyota has not dared to bring the GR Corolla to Europe so far. Nevertheless, here we see a wrapped test model on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. What Toyota exactly plans to do with this test model is still a mystery. Toyota may be busy testing an even more powerful version of the GR Corolla, although we must admit that we do not see any external differences between this test model and the existing version. Except for one important point: the rear spoiler. This is much larger than the normally extra large version that is on the more expensive Circuit Edition. Toyota has also apparently replaced the rear seat with a roll cage. Before the GR Corolla was sharpened, there was a special two-seater version of the model, the Morizo Edition. Will we see the renewed version of this one going around? Who knows? The Dutch importer certainly does not. The hot Corolla would certainly be a great tastemaker.
