Nail fungus is not rare: doctors estimate that 50% of nail infections are due to fungus – we then speak of onychomycosis or nail mycosis. Caused by a fungus, onychomycosis is favored by humidity and/or maceration (for example: in case of excessive sweating), wearing closed shoes, unsuitable hygiene (insufficient or excessive) or even certain diseases (diabetes , obesity…).
An antiseptic mouthwash to get rid of nail fungus
How do you treat nail fungus? After confirmation of the diagnosis (thanks to a sample), nail fungus is treated using an antifungal treatment in the form of gel or ointment. In the most serious cases, oral treatment can also be implemented.
But that’s not the only option. In a video posted on Instagram, Dr. Neera Nathan (who is a dermatologist surgeon in the United States, and who can be found behind the account @dermatologysurgeon) gives us an anti-nail fungus tip: mouthwash!
“Listerine brand antiseptic mouthwash has antifungal properties thanks to several molecules: thymol, menthol and eucalyptol. This product is therefore very interesting in cases of nail fungus (on the foot or hand), and its effectiveness is comparable to local antifungal treatments prescribed by doctors.” underlines the specialist.
DIY anti-nail fungus solution: instructions from the dermatologist
How to use it? The dermatologist recommends generously soaking a cotton ball with mouthwash then patting the fungal lesion and letting it air dry, once a day. Another possibility: soak the affected finger or toe in a small bowl of Listerine for 15 to 20 minutes, at least 4 times a week.
The only drawback of this DIY treatment is that it is very long. Allow 6 months of treatment to overcome a fungus on the finger, and 1 year of treatment if the fungus is on a toe.
