Nanoleaf Cone, a smart battery-powered light compatible with Matter

We tested the new Nanoleaf Cone smart light, with Bluetooth and Matter connectivity that make it compatible with any home automation platformand a battery life of more than five hours that allows you to take it anywhere.

Small, portable and great autonomy

Nanoleaf Umbra Cone is a portable lamp with a fairly small size (139x143mm) and a very peculiar design. The main body is cone-shaped (hence its name) but it has an X-shaped base that acts as a leg, handle or stand. Available in various colors, the one we were able to test is the Sierra model, with an orange-brown color. The entire lamp is made of plastic from its body to the light shade. There is no glass anywhere, which makes it light and resistant to falls or knocks. What it does not have is water resistance, even though its appearance would give that impression.

It has a USB-C connection through which we can recharge it (cable included in the box) and a single touch button that serves for all the possible functions we can imagine: turn on, turn off, dim, change color, reset… Everything is done with one touch, two touches, one touch and hold… It is convenient that there is a touch control so you do not always have to resort to the mobile application to be able to control the light. SIts autonomy according to the manufacturer is 5 hours, which is curious because in my tests it exceeds those 5 hours. plenty.

It has a brightness of 130 lumens, which is not too much for lighting but it is enough for decoration, which is its main function. We have whites in warm and cold tones (2700 to 6500 K) and more than 16 million colors, with a color rendering index (CRI) of more than 90.a high level of colour reliability. Colours can be controlled using the physical button, but to get the most out of it you have to use the Nanoleaf app or the Home app, although with the latter you won’t have access to the animations.

Bluetooth y Thread

We can use the lamp without any connection, opt for the Bluetooth connection (up to 5 lamps can be grouped) or use the Thread connection to connect it to our home automation network, which in addition to consuming less battery will allow you to control it from anywhere, even remotely, and integrate it with other lights and devices on your network. When using Matter, it can be added to Apple HomeKit, Google Home or Alexa, you can choose the platform you like best. Remember that to use Thread you need a device that acts as a Hub, such as the HomePod mini, HomePod 2nd Gen or Apple TV 4K. There are also other Nanoleaf lights that can perform this function such as Lines, Elements or Shapes.

Nanoleaf Cone

Editor’s opinion

The new Nanoleaf Umbra has a very original design and excellent autonomy, as well as the great advantage of using Matter to be compatible with any home automation platform and being able to use Bluetooth when there is no internet connection. As a decorative light it offers very good results, and the possibility of being able to place it anywhere is a great advantage. However, not being waterproof or not being able to be used to light a small room due to its limited brightness are its main drawbacks. You can buy it at Nanoleaf for €110 (link).
