The development of humanity requires not only the creation of more interesting and effective solutions for our comfort and development. Taking care of the planet is also an important element, which has been the number 1 topic, especially in recent years – for example in the case of transport. We travel more and more, we use airplanes a lot, and this generates high costs… ecological.
This is why NASA wants to create the plane of the future. It is to be a passenger machine that will be used for everyday transport of people, at the same time limited environmental impactperhaps even zero-emission. The goal is not to change our habits, but to ensure that they do not harm the planet as such. This challenge is big, but it can be done. However, this will cost a lot – and someone may get quite rich from the project.
There is a competition for a new plane
Due to the desire to create a new aircraft, NASA commissioned five new design studies as part of the Advanced Aircraft Concepts for Environmental Sustainability (AACES) 2050 initiative. What organizations are participating in the initiative? These are:
The list therefore shows both a mixture of many years of experience in aviation (e.g. Pratt & Whitney) and a start-up approach to the matter, thanks to the involvement of JetZero.
Through initiatives like AACES, NASA is able to leverage a wide range of perspectives on how to continue to improve aircraft efficiency, reduce aviation’s environmental impact and enhance U.S. technological competitiveness in the 2040s, 2050s and beyond.
Awards given as part of NASA-sponsored research include over $11 billion. Therefore, we are talking about a serious investment that has a chance to revolutionize air transport in the next few decades. And what is the focus of the work of researchers and scientists? There are several important areas.
The vision of the future aircraft will include innovations in several areas. One of them is fuel. Modern machines are to be powered by effective and ecological fuel that will be able to ensure high efficiency during combustion, while leaving much less pollutants in the atmosphere than currently used substances.
Similar modifications will apply to the structure of the hulls. Better aerodynamics is intended to allow less energy to be used to drive the machine. This is quite an interesting area – can the current shape of planes be further improved? NASA project participants will try to answer this question.
The selected proposals come from a diverse range of organizations that will provide exciting and wide-ranging exploration of the scenarios, technologies and aircraft concepts that will advance aviation towards its transformative sustainability goals.
The designed concepts are expected to come into use within the next 25 years. This means that in our lifetime – maybe even from our home airports – completely different planes will take off.
