(Health Korea News / Lee Chang-yong) The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) announced on the 12th that it had selected Tanzania and Paraguay as targets for the Korean-style health insurance support project in the ‘Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) 2024 Integrated Government, Local Government, and Public Cooperation Project Competition’.

The Tanzania project is a project to support the establishment of a sustainable health insurance system by conducting consulting on ▲establishing a mid- to long-term implementation plan and a pilot project to expand subscribers, ▲strengthening system operation capacity, and ▲improving health insurance awareness in line with the new local single health insurance law (December 2024). The project will begin this month.

The Paraguay project (proposed amount: 13 billion won) is a project that supports the establishment of a national health screening system over five years by ▲developing a national health screening program based on mobile screening, ▲introducing a health promotion project linked to smart-based health screening, and ▲implementing a nationwide pilot project, thereby contributing to improving the quality of life of the people through early detection of major diseases and increased health awareness. The details are scheduled to be finalized after a preliminary investigation in the second half of this year.

The corporation aims to go beyond the grammar of existing international business and lead the activation of international partnerships in which the public and private sectors cooperate by proposing customized specialized projects for partner countries led by the corporation, as well as achieving universal health coverage for all citizens of each country.

The current director of planning at the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service, Hyun-ryong Lee, said, “This project will establish itself as an exemplary case of building a win-win model between the government, corporations, and the state. As a global leader in the field of ‘bio-digital health,’ we will take the lead in international development cooperation like those of advanced countries so that we can lead the international health agenda and continue to contribute to creating national added value.”

Meanwhile, the National Health Insurance Corporation has been recognized as a specialized health insurance organization in the international community by carrying out various official development assistance (ODA) projects such as knowledge sharing, consulting/design, and invitation training with 29 countries around the world, starting with Vietnam in 2011.

An official from the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service said, “Earlier this year, we established the ‘Global Cooperation Office’ to focus on discovering and promoting specialized K-health insurance public business models for the corporation,” adding, “This project is a result of these efforts and is significant as the first case of expanding public-private cooperation in official development assistance projects.”
