The ships will remain at sea until April and will be positioned near power and data cables to deter any sabotage attempts. The decision to step up NATO’s commitment comes after several incidents in the Baltic Sea in recent months, the most recent act of sabotage targeting a cable linking Finland and Estonia and four telecommunications cables over Christmas.

Finland is currently conducting a criminal investigation into the Eagle S oil tanker, which is part of Moscow’s “ghost fleet”, the main suspect.

Estonia has launched its own naval operation to protect the Estlink-2 power cable, which sends electricity between Finland and Estonia.

The incident caused an uproar in Europe, with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte promising to “improve the military presence in the Baltic Sea”. The British-led grouping, made up mainly of Baltic and Nordic countries, which cooperates in defense, the Joint Expeditionary Force, announced on Monday that it will increase the monitoring of ship traffic through the use of artificial intelligence.

Several other disruptions have occurred in recent months in the Baltic Sea, including a broken internet cable between Finland and Germany and another between Finland and Sweden.
