US President Joseph Biden plans to give two major speeches before leaving office as part of an effort to highlight what he sees as his key achievements in more than 50 years of public service, NBC News reported today.
Sources familiar with the US president’s plans told NBC that Biden’s first speech should focus on foreign policy, and is expected to be delivered after he returns from a trip to Italy on January 12.
The same sources stated that Biden then plans to end his final days in the White House with a farewell address to the country. Neither speech is fully composed, sources familiar with the president’s plans said, but the contours and themes of both addresses have been developed.
In his farewell address, Biden is expected to offer Americans a message for the future and reflect on his decades in public office, including four years in the White House, sources familiar with the president’s plans said.
The previous presidents of the USA, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton gave their farewell speeches from the White House, and Barack Obama decided to address the nation from his hometown of Chicago, in front of a large audience of supporters, according to NBC News.
Biden’s foreign policy speech should focus on his belief that America is stronger when it invests in its alliances around the world, sources familiar with his plans said, and he is expected to highlight his efforts to expand and strengthen NATO and US relations in Indo -The Pacific, as well as his administration’s military and financial support to Ukraine since the Russian invasion in 2022.
Biden also plans to travel to New Orleans tomorrow to meet with family members of the victims of the terrorist attack that took place in that city on January 1, as well as with local officials, and then he will visit California.
On Thursday next week, Biden is scheduled to travel to Rome and the Vatican for a three-day visit, possibly his last international trip as US president.
Before he leaves the White House on Jan. 20, Biden is expected to issue new pardons, particularly focused on sentencing disparities, a person familiar with his plans said, NBC News reported.
