Canadian songwriter Neil Young is dropping out of playing the big Glastonbury music festival in the summer of 2025.
On his website, the 79-year-old folk rock star writes that he was “delighted to play at Glastonbury, one of my favorite outdoor concert venues”.
But according to the singer, the BBC “wanted us to do a lot of things in a way that we weren’t interested in”.
The English Glastonbury Festival will take place from 25 to 29 June in 2025.
– It seems that Glastonbury allows itself to be controlled by financial interests (corporate control in English, ed.), writes Young.
– We’re not going to play Glastonbury on this tour because it’s a business-minded turnoff – and not what it used to be for me.
Glastonbury, one of Europe’s biggest music festivals, attracted over 200,000 visitors to the festival last summer.
The 2025 edition sold out in just over half an hour.
Neither the festival organizers nor the BBC have returned a request from the AFP news agency for a statement about Young’s announcement.
There have been rumors that Young would perform there with the band The Chrome Hearts. He last played at Glastonbury in 2009.
At the time, the BBC reported that the outlet spent “months” negotiating with Young about what could be broadcast of the concert.
Neil Young is one of Canada’s most famous musicians, with songs such as “Heart of Gold”, “Old Man”, “Rocking in a Free World” and “Helpless”, as well as the album “Harvest”.
He is considered one of rock music’s biggest names.
