The influential American newspaper The Washington Post (WP) announced on Friday that it will not support Democrat Kamala Harris or Republican Donald Trump in the upcoming US presidential elections.

The editorial office of the newspaper supported one of the candidates for the White House for more than three decades, reports AFP and The New York Times (NYT).

The Washington Post thus decided to stay out of perhaps the most polarizing election in the history of the United States. It’s a return “to our roots of not supporting presidential candidates,” said WP CEO William Lewis. According to him, the newspaper will not recommend any of the candidates even in the next elections in the coming years.

The WP has expressed support for either of the two major presidential candidates since 1976, when it endorsed Jimmy Carter. He also won the election, reminds the NYT. The decision follows ongoing unrest at The Los Angeles Times, where the editor-in-chief and two editors resigned this week in protest of the paper’s owner’s decision to block a planned presidential endorsement for Kamala Harris.
