Construction work in progress at Nestlé. Its flagship brand Nespresso, after launching a pilot of its first paper capsules in 2022, in place of the multi-colored aluminum ones, is slowly starting the industrialization of the process. The Orbe site in Switzerland has been home to a dedicated line since the end of the first quarter, whose process and capacity are similar to those of a traditional line.
Certified PFAS-free
No investment amount or volume is communicated. The capsules are made of paper pulp, like egg cartons, on which 20 microlayers of paper and a biopolymer are applied to protect the coffee from oxidation. No PFAS have found their way into the packaging, assure the development teams. The manufacturer had to make some adjustments after initial customer feedback, as the capsule, compatible with existing coffee machines, did not eject properly after use. Another development is the end of cardboard cases. To protect the product from mold, Nespresso now sells it in sachets. The shelf life has been reduced from fifteen to six months.
